Worms are malicious software programmes that copy themselves and spread across networks or devices without needing to attach to other programmes or for anyone to run them. They exploit weaknesses in network services or applications to move from one computer to another, often propagating rapidly and consuming bandwidth and system resources. As worms travel independently they can carry additional payloads to install backdoors or download further malware, maintaining their presence on multiple machines at once.
